Do you have a Website? Do you need a free SSL certificate? Search engines penalize Websites that are note secure. To be secure you need an SSL for your Website. You can purchase certificates from several vendors but if you are the least bit handy with working with your Website, this guide will walk you through the process of getting a free SSL certificate.
Before we begin, I suggest that you read through all of the steps to make sure that you feel comfortable with doing each of them. The entire process will take about 15-30 minutes your first time doing it but it will get easier. The certificate will be good for 90 days so you’ll need to do this quarterly to maintain a secure Website.
Begin by making sure that you have the following:
- An account for your domain that has telnet or SSH access
- You have downloaded and installed PuTTY
- You have generated a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for your Website. This needs to match the root URL for your Website. e.g. If the Website always goes to something like www.LincOn.com, then your CSR needs to reflect. If it goes to just LincOn.com, then it needs to reflect that.
If you have all of these items, CLICK HERE to go through the process of obtaining a free SSL certificate.
Following these steps you can have a free SSL certificate that is good for the next three months! Free is better than hundreds of dollars!
