Not only is it more\nformal than casual conversation and contains business specific jargon, but it\ncontains words and phrases that you would here nowhere else besides an office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following conversation that could\ntake place in any home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Husband:&nbsp;\nI think we need a new TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wife: I don\u2019t think we can afford one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Husband: I think if we eat out a few less times\nwe could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wife: OK, that\u2019s makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s convert that to an office\nconversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee #1: I\u2019ve written up a proposal based\non the need for a new digital content display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee #2: I don\u2019t know that we can support\nthat in the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee #1: My analysis shows that we would\nhave the ROI but I\u2019m not sure about the resources to implement the\nproject.&nbsp; I\u2019ll work through channels to\nsee if we can actualize on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee #2: Are you sure you have the\nbandwidth to make this happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee #1: Sure, I just hope there aren\u2019t any\nred flags that turn out to be show stoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This talk can be confusing to anyone not in an\noffice on a daily basis and so this dictionary of office talk or office speak was\ncreated for people who are new to the office environment.&nbsp; It contains over 500 words and phrases that\nyou will hear in an office setting and almost never hear outside of the office\nwith that meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A word of caution \u2013 many, if not all, of these\nwords are disliked when they are used too often.&nbsp; Some are just annoying in their own\nright.&nbsp; Your best bet is to just use them\nsparingly.&nbsp; You can spread them out\noccasionally and you\u2019ll sound like an up and coming business professional.&nbsp; Use them too often and you\u2019ll start to sound\nlike someone who doesn\u2019t know what they are doing and people will start\nquestioning everything that you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My suggestion is to use this guide to\nunderstand what it is that others are trying to convey to you.&nbsp; After a while you\u2019ll start to spot the folks\nthat just like to scatter their speak with buzzwords just for the sake of doing\ndo and those that know what they are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are my top 10 tips for using this\ndictionary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start small \u2013 Try a word out.&nbsp; If it feels right, go with it.&nbsp; If it feels awkward, try again.<\/li><li>Use them sparingly &#8211; Don\u2019t use too many at once .<\/li><li>Make sure you know the context! \u2013 Some words or phrases need to be used in context.&nbsp; Look at the example sentences to understand the context a little better.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t go up against an expert \u2013 If someone is a professional buzzword user, it\u2019s best to not try and out \u201cbusiness talk\u201d them.&nbsp; They already know that they are superior.&nbsp; You can\u2019t win.<\/li><li>Know your industry \u2013 Some of these words are used in Information Technology shops.&nbsp; Others in Financial shops.&nbsp; Try to keep terms relevant.<\/li><li>Be a listener \u2013 Listen to how people are talking.&nbsp; You might be the quiet one at first but you\u2019re taking it all in.<\/li><li>Know your position \u2013 If you\u2019re talking to someone who is above you, try and use positive actional words (like that\u2019s even a word!)<\/li><li>Be yourself \u2013 Like I said in tip 1, don\u2019t try to use or say words that don\u2019t reflect you.<\/li><li>Be Flexible \u2013 This dictionary is a snap shot in time.&nbsp; Some new words may come into parlance and some may go out of style.&nbsp; Using a cutting edge word (see how I did that?) can reveal to someone if you are on the bleeding edge or old fashioned.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t carry this around \u2013 You\u2019ll automatically looks like someone who doesn\u2019t know what they are doing! <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Office speak or jargon is a relatively new\nphenomenon but it\u2019s become the way people talk in professional settings.&nbsp; You won\u2019t hear it outside of a business\nsetting.&nbsp; While there have always been\nwords that are coined to suit the technology and times that it comes be, it\nwasn\u2019t until the 80s that things started to shift.&nbsp; Personnel departments became \u201cHuman Resources\u201d\nand terms started shifting reflecting the increased use of computers.&nbsp; E.g.
