Synopsis: Historic site of portage from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. Located on the west side of SR 43 (Harlem Ave), about two blocks north of I-55. Stamp Location: Stamp is only available at The Little Red School House Nature Center (in the Cook County Forest Preserve) at 9800 S. 104th Ave. in Willow Springs (708.839.6897). Take SR 171 north from Lockport (and the I & M NHC VC) to 95th St and then turn right on 104th St until you see the School House. If the house is closed, go to the administration building to the right and ask for someone there. |

Synopsis: Preserves historic canal which linked Lake Michigan with the Illinois River. An affiliated area. Stamp Location: Stamp is available at the I & M Canal VC at 200 W 8th St in Lockport (off SR 171), the Chicago Historical Society at the south end of Lincoln Park (Clark Street at North Avenue), The Joliet Historical Museum at 204 N. Ottawa St., Gephard Woods SP in Morris, the Illlinois Waterway VC in Ottawathe Isle La Cache Museum in Romeoville, the Seneca Grain Elevator in Seneca, Starved Rock SP in Utica and the Little Red School House (see directions to the Chicago Portage site above). Also available at the I&M Canal NHC Commission office at 15701 S. Independence Blvd. (SR 53) about one half mile north of the intersection of SR 53 and SR 171 west of Lockport and the Illinois Waterway VC on Dee Bennett Rd, about 3 miles east of Utica.
